Fluid

In today’s culture, some people aren’t quite sure what exactly “truth” means. “Truth can be whatever I want it to be,” they say. But I am not one of these people. I believe in eternal, absolute morality. Truth is not fluid like a lava lamp; it is a solid mountain to be grounded upon.

For something to be considered “true,” it must be verifiable either physically, or against some established standard. For us Christians, this standard is the Bible. Our basic assumption is that God exists and that He is true to His Word.

Some non-Christians may scoff and question this assumption. But allow me to ask this question: what assumption is that argument based upon?—that there is no God? How can you prove that? You say, “you can’t prove that there, in fact, is a God.” No, but you also cannot prove that there is not a God. That is where faith comes in. I believe there is enough evidence just in the human body alone to demand an Intelligent Creator. But we are getting off the main point.

The main point is that truth can be based upon and against the Scriptures. Morality and ethics have been established in one handbook for upright living—the Bible. We’ve already discussed that scriptural authority cannot be physically proved or disproved; it is a matter of faith. So for now, we will continue with our assumption that God exists and is true to His word.

In the book of II Timothy, Paul writes that “all scripture is God-breathed, and useful for… instruction in righteousness” (depending on which version you have). That’s pretty plainly stated. Everything in The Book is inspired by a holy God. It is a standard by which to base your morals. Truth is not fluid. It is set in stone—or print, rather. And “God is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow.” Sounds like a pretty settled matter to me.

“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” ~ Second Timothy 3:16-17, NKJV
