Competence

I touched on this issue slightly in my last post and thought it deserved further attention. The issue would be that of Competent Christians.

A couple months ago I attended The Rebelution Conference and they exhorted us to become competent Christians. They said “Competent nonbelievers are outperforming incompetent Christians.” This matter of competence goes back to my previous post on training. We can never be competent in combat without first two things: 1) proper instruction, and 2) exposure to battle.

First of all, you must have not merely “adequate” directions—you must have informed, educated instructions. But even the most educated teachers can be misled, in which case a wrong word might as well have been not spoken at all. So where do we learn our battle strategies? From the instruction manual of life: the Bible. Any and all information gleaned from it will not only be right and true, but in it we find every single teaching we need to become competent warriors.

But knowledge without action is worthless. We need combat to enact what we’ve learned in the down times. And with this army, there is no difficulty in finding fights! Satan is relentless in hunting us down, giving us ample opportunities to practice what we’re preached. So why wait until you’re caught in the crossfire of an ambush to learn what to do? Open that Bible of yours and start preparing for battle!

“But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.” ~ I Peter 3:15
